Harmful Content

There are some great things you can see on the internet, but sometimes people with bad intentions can post pictures and things to read which might upset you. This might be racist, violent, pornographic or abusive images.

What to do next

If you see anything which upsets you or makes you feel uncomfortable online it is important for you to tell an adult you trust. Don’t click on the image or content, as this may take you further into the site. The best thing to do is to turn off the screen or close your laptop and to alert a trusted adult. This could be a parent, carer or teacher. They can report this content to the International Watch Foundation (IWF).

Report to the IWF

If someone has acted inappropriately online towards you or a young person in your care, you can report it directly to us. This could include sending them pornography, child abuse images, asking them to strip on webcam, asking them where they live, wanting to meet up with them, sexual text or anything that makes them feel worried or uncomfortable. This material could be sent to them via email, in a chat room, on a message board or on a social networking site.

Report to CEOP Centre

If you've been upset by some nasty content or an inappropriate image you may want to chat to someone about how you feel. There4me is a site where you can have a private one-to-one chat with someone from the children's charity NSPCC.

Childline has a free and confidential telephone number - 0800 1111 where you can talk to someone in private. This number won’t show up on your phone bill, keeping your conversation private.
