The Use of the Internet by Child Sex Offenders
Keynote Speakers - Joe Sullivan
Introduction
The growth in the use of the internet has opened up a whole new environment where people with a sexual interest in children can exchange indecent images and meet other likeminded individuals in a way that was not really possible before. The emergence of online child abuse networks where images and fantasies are shared between members around the world is one such consequence of this virtual world which has real victims.
The internet has opened up a whole new way to meet people and communicate outside of conventional social contexts. Email, chat rooms and instant messaging are integral to the online environment and an important part in the lives of many children. Unfortunately, this provides an opportunity that can be exploited by those with a sexual interest in children to meet and groom vulnerable, young people.
The links between the use of the internet and sexual offences against children are complicated. So how and why do some individuals seek and collect images of child abuse? Do all ‘collectors’ go on to sexually abuse children? How dangerous are ‘collectors’ of images to children?
This course will answer all this and more.
Benefits to the delegate
At the end of the course delegates will have:
- gained a clear understanding of how offenders behave in the online environment, including “grooming” behaviour;
- gained an insight into children’s risk taking behaviour and its exploitation by offenders;
- experienced new and emerging online environments;
- looked at the role of fantasy and the collection of images; and
- considered how the spiral of sexual abuse (a theoretical model for understanding and explaining child sexual abuse) relates to internet offenders.
The course material is aimed at personnel who have a direct working interest in this area of criminality and who already have some knowledge of the basic elements involved. It is an opportunity for practitioners to have access to the most current and useful knowledge and information available to assist in their work.
