Using the Sexual Offences Act 2003 to Protect Children from Harm

Keynote Speaker - Nadim Bashir, Barrister at Law

The aim of criminal law is to permit everyone to go about their daily lives without fear of harm to person or property. However, by its very nature, it is reliant on the commission of a criminal offence and the apprehension of offenders to come in to effect.

A new approach was signalled when Section 1 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, as amended by the Police Reform Act 2002, was enacted. This legislation allows pro-active policing as a preventative measure adopting the model of a civil remedy of an injunction backed up by criminal penalties.

With this change in legislation and with the same intentions in mind, these civil remedies have been taken much further than could have been imagined by the passing of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 which came into force in May 2004.

This legislation has given UK law enforcement more opportunities to use non-traditional intervention methods to penalise and track offenders, thereby reducing harm to the community and protecting potential victims. This course can offer the opportunity for law enforcement and child protection professionals to learn more of this legislation and these methods.

The course is led by an experienced barrister and focuses on both criminal and civil orders created by the Sexual Offences Act 2003 for the prevention and protection of children from sexual acts and activities namely:

The course is delivered as a combination of lectures and scenario based group exercises.
